Community Outreach
As the Sullivan County Prosecutor, I believe it is imperative for members of our office to be active participants in our community in an effort to make Sullivan County a safer place to live. We strive to get involved with local organizations, churches and schools to educate the public on everything from drug awareness to identity theft and fraud. Here are a few examples of recent community outreach activities:
Painting Nails and Applying Tattoos for “Night Out”
The Prosecutor’s office team got together on August 16th to support Sullivan County’s first annual “Night Out”. The Prosecutor’s tent was providing free nail painting and temporary tattoos to both children and adults. “This event is a wonderful way for law enforcement and emergency workers to stay in touch with the community” said Prosecutor Hunley. “Our lines were full all evening…this event has been a great success for Sullivan County”
On June 5, 2010, Bob Hunley served time in the Merom “Jail” to raise money for Stair Steps to Success at the Chautauqua. Stair steps is a mentoring program for the youth of Sullivan County.
On April 15, 2010, Bob Hunley spoke with students in the Vincennes University conservation law class taught by DNR Officer Tom Layhay.

On April 9th, Bob Hunley hosted the annual RCA 2nd grade courthouse tour with Mrs. Baker’s class. The students were able to watch a criminal proceeding and learn about how the criminal justice system works. Pictured below is the class with Bob Hunley and Judge Pierson in Circuit Court.

On March 13, Prosecutor Bob Hunley, Investigator Marie Watson and Victim’s Advocate Jan Milliken worked a booth at Ag Day at the 4H fairgrounds. Bob presented a powerpoint presentation on the adverse health effects of Methamphetamine. Pictured below are Bob, his wife Dana, and Jan Milliken
On November 12, Prosecutor Bob Hunley and probation officer Angie Jahn presented Sullivan 5th grader, Jon Sluder the Grand Prize in the Probation Department’s Red Ribbon Week Anti-Drug Poster Contest.

On September 17, 2009, Bob Hunley and attorney Jeff Hawkins spoke to the students of Sullivan Middle School as part of the “Ask Me What’s Great About America” project. Click the play button below to view the WTWO news story about the speech What’s great about America:
During the September 2009 Corn Festival, Bob and his staff manned a tent focused on Meth prevention and Victim awareness. ”It was a great opportunity to talk to people in the community” said Hunley. Pictured below are Victim’s Advocate Jan Milliken, Katie Springer and Bob Hunley.
On September 11, 2009 long time investigator for the Prosecutors office, Joe Fitch retired from our office. Joe has been active in law enforcement for over 53 years and has been an asset to Sullivan County for some time. Visit our press release page for more information about Joe’s retirement. Below, Prosecutor Bob Hunley presents Joe with a plaque for his years of dedicated work as a law enforcement officer in Sullivan County.

On July 25, 2009, Bob Hunley and Katie Springer hosted a luncheon for Indiana C.O.P.S (Concerns of Police Survivors). These are police officers who bicycle across Indiana to raise money and awareness for survivors of fallen officers. On July 15th, Bob Hunley, Katie Springer and Brent Stringer worked the Health Fair at the 2009 4-H fair. They showed the power point presentation: Meth and your Health, a Deadly Combination.
On June 24th, the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s office presented retiring Carlisle Town Marshal, Bill Sam Phegley, with a plaque recognizing his 13 years of distinguished service during a recent county law enforcement meeting. In the picture below, Phegley accepts the plaque from Prosecutor Bob Hunley. ”Bill Sam was a great town marshal and will truly be missed by our office,” Hunley said.

In June of 2009, Bob Hunley launched the first Sullivan County Prosecutor’s website to better serve the people of Sullivan County. By logging on you can find information about child support, print legal documents and look at a county most wanted list. On May 20th, Dugger Elementary invited Bob Hunley to speak at Alumni Career Day. Bob, a Union High Graduate, had the opportunity to discuss his job with the students and stress the importance of staying in school and staying off drugs. The kids had the opportunity to ask the prosecutor many questions ranging from what types of cases our office handles to questions involving how to stay away from illegal activities.

On May 1st, Bob Hunley visited Shelburn Elementary to read students a story entitled “I’m So Mad”. In the book a child is so upset with his parents because they make him follow his parent’s rules that he tries to run away from home. After the story, Bob discussed with the children the dangers of running away from home and the importance of minding their parents.

During Victims Awareness week, Victim’s Advocate Jan Milliken traveled throughout the county hanging posters to increase victim awareness and left many flyers at local businesses. A copy of the flyer “Victim’s Matter” can be downloaded.

On April 14, 2009, Bob Hunley gave the 2nd grade class from RCA a tour of the courthouse. The kids were able to visit both courtrooms, watch a criminal initial hearing, and find out about how our criminal justice system works.

In March of 2009, the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office attended AG Day at the 4-H fairgrounds. Bob Hunley presented a power point presentation on Agriculture and Methamphetamine in an effort to educate farmers of the wide spread use of Anhydrous Ammonia in the illegal manufacture of Meth.
